Something is afoot

So let me start this by saying I just medicated myself with some higher strength prescription meds that my doc prescribed me. Hopefully all this makes sense. I am creating this to document the wheres and whatfors that happen with this ordeal, as it is getting complicated and slow.

March 28th – Owwww

It was a somewhat chilly Thursday and I decided I wanted to look pretty for my honey. Which is not normal for me, because in case you’re new here, I’m a bit of a tomboy. So took a shower, put on a dress, and heels. Not just any heels, these were at least 4 inch stiletto heels. Everything was going fine and I was walking in the heels to get used to them. I was walking to my purse to get something out of it. I went to turn one way, but my ankle had other ideas. Down I went with a rather painful screaming as my left foot is stuck in the toe portion of the heels as there’s a strap that kept the shoe on my foot. After lots of crying and a preliminary check by my roommate we determined nothing was broken. We were wrong – I’ll get to that later though. As all this is happening, hubby comes home to me on the floor a mess of tears and unable to put any weight on my left foot. After a lot of acrobatics and pain, I managed to get back up and upstairs to my bed. At this point the swelling has started and my foot looks like a Vienna sausage. We got the foot elevated and iced periodically. Pain finally got down to a bearable level and I went to bed for the night.

March 29 – to the ER I go

The following morning I wake up in a fair amount of pain, and I’m wondering if I did indeed actually break something. Kiddo missed his bus, so I called him in sick, and took him to the ER with me. Long story short they did a panel of x-rays on my foot, and the results said I have swelling but there’s nothing broken. They put me in an ankle brace, and give me some good pain meds that’ll also help with the swelling. It worked so well that I was able to motor through that last week of work before I go on my Seattle trip. I’m not gonna go over that in detail as that’s a separate blog I’ve already timelined in detail.

March 31st – April 3rd – Work

Normal work week for me, yes I had pain but the meds they had me on made it bearable. So nothing really too much to document here. I would also like to point out that April 3rd is the night my hubby went off to the Mojave desert with his brother for some off-roading. He’ll be gone for a bit and I will leave for Seattle before he comes back.

April 4th – April 6th – Solo kinda

Well like I said hubby is in the Mojave desert with his brother off-roading in the van. He’s in and out of cell service so I get some updates sporadically, but essentially he’s having a lot of fun. I in solo mode decide to stay off my feet to let my foot heal as much as it could before my Seattle trip. The puppies keep me company, as I’m pretty sure they realize I need company to keep from going insane. Being solo is hard on me as I’m used to having at least one social interaction a day. With him in the desert this is restricted to just talking via text message. I do manage to talk to the roomie and the kiddo a little bit. But overall nothing crazy happened here. I got some last minute stuff for the trip via Instacart (again staying off my foot).

April 7th – 12th – Seattle

Like I mentioned I’m not gonna go into detail here as I’ve already blogged the events of my Seattle trip. But long story short on my flight home I was in so much pain that when my hubby picked me up, we bee-lined it back to the ER. More x-rays of course. Still nothing emergent popping up here, but this time there is a change. My pinky toe has a fracture. But here’s the interesting part, the notes from the doctor said that it was there the first time I came in. They put me in a boot and told me to take naproxen for pain. I have a doctor appointment with my GP scheduled for April 19th. I have also been to an orthopedic doctor to look over my foot.

TLDR: Xray says toe is fractured when they said there’s nothing wrong the first time.

April 13th – Resting

Hubby woke up with a fraud alert on his card. So he called our bank and did indeed have some fraudulent charges. His card is now de-activated, charges declined, and a new one coming in the mail. We go and grab some lunch at Capri which is rather amazing if you’re ever in the Treasure Valley, please go there and get a Philly cheesesteak. While we’re having lunch, I then notice that I also have a fraud alert on my phone. And yes, it was indeed a fraudulent charge. So I call the bank and they did the same thing. Now neither of us have cards that can access our account. Apple Pay to the rescue. Because of this I am not able to finish filing our taxes, so I filed for an extension. The rest of the day I spend resting and catching up on shows I watch. Lots of rest basically.

April 14th – back to work

So I started my first day back to work doing ok. But that’s temporary. Hubby and I got me hooked up with a lap desk, where I brought my keyboard and mouse so I could try to work with my foot elevated. I have it elevated on a little chair. It’s not elevated above the heart which isn’t good IMO. After lunch the pain is starting to kick up and become very painful. I’ve been taking the naproxen as ordered by the doc at the ER. But it’s not working as well anymore. The foot is tingling with pain. I managed to make it most of the day through, but the pain overcomes me and I have to log off for the rest of the day (which is about an hour and 15 minutes). I have the bestest boss in the world, he worked with me to put me on sick leave for the rest of the week.

April 15th – Doc discussions

So because I have been put on sick leave for the rest of this week, I reach out to my doctor’s office to see if we can’t get me in to my GP sooner. I don’t hear anything today. Doesn’t help that I slept in until 12:30 pm. So that’s on me, not them.

April 16th – Medical stuff

A little past 8 AM I get a call from my GP’s office, saying that they can get me in at 2:40 this afternoon. I jump on it and have them book me. Since I have awhile I go back to sleep for a bit. Doc looks over my foot and tests pain in several locations. But essentially there’s a few things that happen because of this visit.

MRI

Doctor has ordered a MRI to be done on my foot. Which is a bit of an ordeal. They have to run it through insurance first and then they’ll call me to get it scheduled. This procedure is pretty important to me as hubby and I think I might’ve done some pretty bad damage to the tendon in my foot. Thus the bump.

Pain meds

Secondly, he did prescribe me some rather stellar pain meds that have essentially gotten me through writing all this today. Supposed to take every 6 hours or as needed. Yay pain meds.

Referral

Doc wants me to follow up with orthopedic doctor that I got referred to if they don’t call by Wednesday (tomorrow). I hope I can get the MRI done and then see the orthopedic doctor. Based on the bump I have, I’m afraid surgery might be required but I’ll let the doc make that decision not me. Not going to diagnose myself.

Doctor’s note

Additionally, doc gave me a note saying that I should not be working this week, and that hopefully I should be able to return to work on the 21st. He also said that if that changes and I need additional help with getting a doctor’s note for additional time to let him know. He’s quite an awesome doctor. Anyhow, that’s where I am now. So hopefully I have some news tomorrow, but for now I’m playing the hurry up and wait game.

April 17th – referral pays off

Not much to say here, outside of they were able to get me in with an orthopedist pretty quickly. I will be seeing him on the 18th.

April 18th – damage report

So we did more x-rays, except this time we did stress bearing x-rays. Well, thing is I did actually fracture one of the metatarsal bones of my foot as well as the piggy toe. I got to see the actual x-rays which is really neat. I had wanted to see the x-rays from the get go. Anyways, so long story short my left leg and foot is now in a purple cast. No word on if the MRI has been approved yet. Orthopedist is also concerned about my plantar tendon, as he thinks I might’ve tore it. Once the cast was on I then had to call my hubby to come pick me up as getting to my car was gonna be next to impossible as I couldn’t really walk well. He picked me up, and then we headed to Norco to get my prescribed knee scooter so I can wheel about. Lemme tell ya I didn’t know I had those muscles until I had to use them, and boy howdy did that hurt trying to steer with my thigh. Getting around is slowly getting easier and I hobble about upstairs, but when I’m downstairs I use the scooter. I have a follow up appointment on May 16th with the orthopedist. Hopefully good news will come from it.

April 19th – MRI approved

So the MRI has been approved, now I’m waiting to hear back from the orthopedist on whether or not they can do an MRI with me having a cast on. More to come on that when it’s not a weekend. I kinda feel like Rapunzel being stuck in my room because moving around is so arduous. Oh well. I hope I don’t regret getting a cast.

April 20th – boredom hits

The boys are playing D&D downstairs while I try to entertain myself with a Netflix show called Baby Reindeer. I feel for this man, as he’s been through quite a bit of hell. No spoilers from me though, so I’ll zip it there. I keep sleeping a lot and I’m hoping that’s just my body saying “Hey, I’m healing over here.” I go back to work tomorrow, hopefully being upright in my seat all day doesn’t cause me a lot of pain. I need to be able to work, or I’ll have to take a leave of absence.

April 21st – work not working

Not much to say here I made it a couple of hours before the pain in my foot became too much to bear. I am now on a leave of absence with work, with an unknown return date. I really hope I don’t regret this.
